Abstract

Background Many professionals would remain in healthcare if they were offered improved education and development opportunities. A national charitable organisation implemented a Quality Assurance (QA) process aligned to the Health Education England QA Framework to standardise the quality of education and training development and delivery.

Aim To ensure that all the health care workforce across a national organisation is receiving standardised high-quality evidenced-based education and training that meets legal and regulatory requirements, and professional standards. This will ensure that the workforce has the skills and knowledge to provide high quality specialist care that is required for the patients who are accessing the specialist services.

Method The Central Education Team undertook a review of the current internal education and training including resources created, developed, and delivered, in addition to qualifications of educators delivering training, train the trainer and peer reviews. The analysis of this data showed inconsistencies. A QA Policy was developed and implemented, and educators were upskilled with relevant qualifications. The policy had specific definitions for roles and responsibilities, as well as standardised processes, including:

  • QA criteria and process.

  • Lesson plan and PowerPoint presentation templates.

  • Approval process for QA.

A review of current material was quality assured and prioritized/allocated to review/created against the QA policy, the rollout of training and Train the Trainer (TtT) process. All materials are stored in a central repository once quality assured for all educators to access. Peer reviews and audits are scheduled to ensure that the quality of education is maintained on a regular basis.

Result All health care educators engaged with this process and were involved with the working group to review current materials aligned to QA.

Conclusion There is standardisation and national oversight of the quality of education and training that is delivered to the healthcare workforce.
