Abstract

Background The benefits of early access to palliative care are well documented (Sleeman, Timms, Gillam, et al. BMC Palliat Care. 2021;20(1):108), however, it is estimated that just 14% of people who need palliative care globally receive it (World Health Organization. Palliative care: key facts. [internet] 2020). According to the Marie Curie report on public attitudes to death and dying (2021), there is little awareness about palliative care and end of life services.

Aims To develop and grow a network of ‘Champions’ from across different settings, communities and partner organisations who have an increased understanding about the hospice and feel confident to raise awareness, signpost people for clinical support, fundraising and volunteer opportunities.

Method We designed a session whereby Champions could learn about the types of illnesses we support, our service provision, how to access support and how we are funded. Supporting ‘toolkit’ materials were created. The session was tested with corporate supporters. The response was positive. 100% of attendees said they would feel confident in using their newly acquired knowledge in and out of the workplace. In September 2023 we began to roll out sessions, alongside ongoing engagement. A further session to support Champions prepare for difficult conversations has been delivered. Promotion and evaluation is ongoing.

Results Seven sessions have been held to date and by the end of 2024, 250 champions will have received training. Champions have shared information with friends, family, colleagues and service users helping to dispel the misconceptions and barriers to accessing care. Champions have shared with networks across the country. One shared that her mother now volunteers at her local hospice and has raised awareness among her friends. A new fundraising support group has been formed.

Conclusion The Champion programme has been effective in increasing the number of anchor individuals who have greater understanding and are helping to change perceptions of hospice care and spread the word among social and professional networks.
