Abstract
Background Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare have had a well utilised respite service within the inpatient unit for six years. During that time, respite patient families/carers have given feedback on how access to hospice services has enabled a safe branch of support. Also the communication from staff and other families and carers on the unit has enabled them to continue to care for their loved one at home. In 2023, following this feedback, the ‘Carers Together Support Group’ was born.
Aim To be able to support carers on a regular basis and provide them with the knowledge and resources to empower them to care for their loved one for as long as possible.
Method The ‘Carers Together Support Group’ is a partnership initiative with North Lincolnshire Carers Support Centre. The group runs monthly and is available for adult carers of people with life-limiting conditions not only known to the hospice, but also within the wider community. The group is widely advertised and is supported by the hospice operational matron and a key worker from the Carers Support Centre. At every meeting the group are individually given the opportunity to share their experiences, access information and receive a complementary therapy.
Results Within four months the group evolved from five members to 12. Based on the nature and content of the group, the hospice has received multiple direct referrals for individuals across North Lincolnshire into hospice services including the wellbeing centre, respite, complementary therapies and counselling. The group have also been involved in hospice strategy work including the introduction of ‘Carer Lanyards’ to promote recognition of unpaid carers.
Conclusion Feedback from one member included ‘the carers group is my lifeline, here with you, all friends together. We come from adversity, and we leave with hope.’
