Abstract
Background Grief can be a complex and challenging experience, and access to bereavement support is crucial for individuals navigating this process. Recognising the need for accessible support, our hospice established a Bereavement Information Point at several of their charity shops, providing local and national resources for the local community.
Aim This initiative’s aim was to offer readily available bereavement support information to those in need, fostering a supportive environment within the hospice shops and empowering individuals to seek assistance during times of grief.
Method The Bereavement Information Points are strategically located inside the shops, ensuring easy accessibility for visitors and staff. The stand features a variety of up-to-date leaflets and contact details for local and national bereavement support organisations. Additionally, paper and pens are available for individuals to jot down personalised information.
Results Feedback from hospice shops indicates a positive reception for the Bereavement Information Point. Customers have expressed gratitude for the support provided, with instances of direct assistance noted. Customer engagement with the stands has been observed, indicating their usefulness. Despite initial visibility challenges reported by some shops, subsequent follow-up revealed increased awareness and utilisation, highlighting the value of the initiative.
Conclusion The establishment of the Bereavement Information Point in our hospice charity shops has proved to be an effective means of providing accessible support to grieving individuals. By offering readily available resources and fostering a supportive environment, the initiative contributes to the holistic care provided by the hospice. We have now extended this resource to include more Bereavement Information Points in five of our community libraries and one in a building society in a busy shopping centre.
