Abstract
Background The Senior Management Team at our hospice embarked on a transformative journey in 2019. Guided by Lady Ryder’s vision of fostering a cherished family home for the community here in Bedfordshire, our goal was to revitalise our once-deteriorating hospice into a beacon of sustainability and inclusivity through the power of co-production.
Aims Our initial efforts focused on physical improvements, such as upgrading water tanks, extending the car park, and installing LED lights. However, by the end of 2023, we transitioned towards unified co-production with both staff and service users, aiming for significant progress and a shared vision of a welcoming environment akin to a comforting family home.
Methods Engaging our service users proved invaluable as their firsthand experiences illuminated blind spots and inspired nuanced improvements. From customisable bedding options to vibrant garden enhancements, their input reshaped our hospice’s environment, infusing it with warmth and inclusivity. This collaborative approach extended to sustainability initiatives, where staff and service users collaborated to create a model rooted in compassion and innovation, revitalising the hospice pond and infusing vibrant artwork throughout.
Conclusion Looking to the future, my team and I aspire to refine our action plan and present a model of sustainable co-production at the Hospice UK conference. Through collective creativity and expertise, we aim to transform our hospice into a beacon of modernity and sustainability, honouring its heritage while fostering equity and inclusivity for all.
