Abstract
Background St Wilfrid’s Hospice is committed to reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainability. The strategy aims to decrease energy consumption, minimize waste, and align with government, NHS (NHS England. Greener NHS. [internet]) and Hospice UK [Environmental sustainability for hospices. [internet] 2024) sustainability goals.
Aim Through the formation of a ‘Green Team’ to reduce fossil energy, exploring green energy alternatives that are cost -effective, sustainable and ensure active participation by staff and volunteers in achieving these objectives.
Method Spring 2023, the hospice installed 288 solar panels, completing June 2023 generating clean, renewable energy, contributing to the hospice’s sustainability efforts. Building on this the hospice commissioned six solar energy storage batteries. These batteries will store excess energy during sunny months and utilize off-peak, cheap rate electricity during winter months, ensuring efficient energy use throughout the day. The use of the solar panel app showing status of solar power generated is displayed in our public area. By combining energy audits, green initiatives, and solar panel installation, St Wilfrid’s Hospice took significant steps toward reducing its carbon footprint.
Where possible recycled stationery is used along with paper cups replacing plastic ones. To reduce water wastage, patient water jugs are decanted into our water butt for garden use.
Results The installation of solar panels at the hospice has yielded remarkable results. Since their implementation, we’ve witnessed a substantial reduction in our carbon footprint, saving a total of 12,286.98 kg of CO2 emissions. This environmental impact is equivalent to the benefit of planting 743 trees. Additionally, the solar panels have generated a substantial 63.54 MWh of electricity.
Financially, during the peak summer months, the hospice has observed a reduction in the electricity bill by over £1000 per month. The forthcoming integration of batteries is projected to further enhance these savings.
Conclusion Continuing work, looking to develop additional solar installations, reducing clinical waste, and further green initiatives.
