GABA agonists baclofen and gabapentin are both described as being effective in 3 of 4 patients with intractable hiccups, but side effects such as dizziness and sleepiness may limit chronic use of these drugs.60,61 Baclofen is started in a dose of 5 mg 4 times/d and this can be increased slowly.
